A Banana Republic
A Banana Republic

Even as the 69th Republic Day of India is drawing closer, I fondly remember the values, the dreams and the aspirations of a newly formed nation after nearly two centuries of foreign rule.

The lofty ideals of keeping the people above everything, and everything means all constraints of hunger, illiteracy, poverty, inequality, untouchability and inequality before the law . We , as a nation, enshrined our faith in a document called the Constitution of India, which was subject to amendments but not against the interests of the people of India. It was our ultimate safeguard against injustice and oppression, against a draconian state and subservient judiciary, against maladies of the self seeking politicians and crony capitalism.

Over the years, the same Constitution has been shred off its flying feathers. In the last six years, a pack of wolves with utter disregard for either Constitution or rule of law have usurped power through one of the dirtiest manipulations in the recent history of the world.

The most glaring example of the end of the rule of law is the sad demise of our judiciary led by the canine submission of the Supreme Court of India. In pursuance of its pro government and anti people stance, the Supreme Court has lost its credibility as an upholder of the values enshrined in the Constitution of India. One after another Chief Justice of India, who have put a price tag of one rupee on their reputation, have sabotaged people’s faith and the law itself. Ranjan Gogoi was not the beginning, it was Justice Deepak Mishra who set the ball rolling . The convoluted sentiments of the worst among the people and the interests of the government of the criminals in robbery of the national wealth in arms deals and illegal decisions like demonetisation and removal of Article 370 sub section a , came to rule over the decisions or the silence of the kangaroo courts headed by the Supreme Court of India.

Institutional integrity is at the root of institutional respect and acceptability. Sadly , our judiciary has willingly surrendered its respectability, reliability and trust of the people. A republic lies in tatters.

The spectre of demonstrations of its military strength against the background of dying and fighting farmers raises a vision of a state at war against its own people. India will witness the most shameless face of its republican existence in its independent history.

Nobody cares really.
